delighted to see the work restoring the old ponds. He was extreme -ly helpful too, pouring out his memories of T henford in the 1920s and 1930s. Alas, he ventured too far into the silt and was only lucky enough to escape because there were workers nearby. Bu t one of his wellies is buried far below – an excitement for a future archaeolo -gist. A warning letter went to everyone in the village. Eventually the ground hardened and its extensive planting now includes an avenue of cherries. They are half of a collection of Prunus which originated in Matsumae, Hokkaido. The other half line the path along the To p Drive going north from our main entrance ( Chapter Four ).

Back to the bridges. The top and middle fishponds had islands so we decided to build two bridges to both. We invited Banbury land -scape architect Robert A dams to design a number of options. We
